２語以上でつくる形容詞のまとまり

形容詞は名詞とセットになる場合は、名詞の前に置かれますが、２語以上で一つのまとまりを作っているときは名詞の後ろに置かれます。また、－thingで終わるものは例外的に形容詞を後ろに置きます。

１語だから前からproblemを説明する
those common problems

２語以上あるのでproblemsの後ろに置く
those problems common to the Japanese

-thingの単語は１語であっても形容詞を後ろに置く
something hot

このほかにも２語以上の形容詞をつくるやり方があります。

前置詞＋名詞

本棚にある本

The computer on the desk is a present from my father.
机の上にあるコンピューターは私の父からのプレゼントだ。


The  book about British history is very interesting.
イギリスの歴史についてのその本はとてもおもしろい。

to不定詞の「～するための・するべき」

I don't have time to study English.

英語を勉強するための時間

People should have the right to smoke.

人々は喫煙する権利を持つべきだ。

In today's meeting, we have a lot of things to discuss.

私たちは今日の会議でたくさん議論することがある。

形容詞として使うing / ed

The baby sleeping in the bed is my son.

ベッドで寝ている赤ちゃん

The book written by Tom is interesting.

トムに書かれた本

Some people studying English don't like it.

英語を勉強している人々のいくらかは英語が好きでない。

Wines produced in France taste good.

フランスで作られているワインはおいしい。

関係代名詞

The book which I bought yesterday is very interesting.

昨日私が買った本

I have a friend who lives in New York.

ニューヨークに住んでいる友達

The man whom I met at the party speaks English well.

私がパーティーで会ったその男性は英語がうまく話せる

This is the restaurant which Tome always visits to eat lunch.

これがトムがいつも昼食を食べにくるレストランだ。

関係副詞

This is the place where I was born.

私が生まれた場所

The company where he will work from next week is in Kyoto.

彼が来週から働く会社は京都にある

That is the reason why I don't like him.

それが私が彼を好きでない理由だ。

I don't notice I'd forgotten all the charts absolutely necessary for the presentation until I started.

私はプレゼンテーションに絶対必要な図表をすべて忘れてきたことに始めるまで気づかなかった。
