S=Cの関係 S+V+C ある状態になるということを表す動詞

Although I was getting tired, I didn't take a break and kept walking.
私は疲れてきていたが、休みをとらずに歩き続けた。
although・・・だけれども
break・・・休憩

The political situation there turned unstable.
そこの政治状況は不安定な状況に変わった。
political・・・政治の
situation・・・状況
unstable・・・不安定な

We had to stay awake because something was wrong with the system.
何かそのシステムがおかしかったので我々は目を覚ましていなければならなかった。
awake・・・目が覚めている

Don't across the road before the traffic light turns green.
信号が青に変わる前にその道路をわたってはいけません。
traffic light・・・信号
cross・・・わたる

People become wiser as they grow older.
人々は年をとるにつれて賢くなる
as S+V・・・SがVするにつれて
wise・・・賢い

When he became an accountant, he was 40 years old.
彼は会計士になった時、40歳だった。

彼は仕事の面接から帰ってきたときとても疲れているように見えた。
interview・・・面接
exhausted・・・とても疲れている。

The result of the survey will remain a secret for a while.
その調査の結果はしばらくの間は秘密として残るだろう。
result・・・結果
survey・・・調査
for a while・・・しばらくの間

You must keep quiet in the case of an emergency.
緊急事態の際には静かにしていなければならない。
in the case of・・・~の際には
emergency・・・緊急事態

When we teased him, he looked irritated.
私たちが彼をからかったとき彼はいらだっていたようだった。
tease・・・からかう
irritated・・・いらだっている

These figures looked accurate, but they were wrong.
これらの数値は正確そうに見えたが、間違いだった。
figure・・・数値
accurate・・・正確
wrong・・・誤った

The device looked very expensive.
その装置はとても高そうに見えた。
device・・・装置

SはVする S+V

その病気はその国で広がっている。
disease・・・病気
spread・・・広がる・広げる
across・・・横切って・端から端まで

The population of the district decreased by 10% last year.
その地区の人口は去年10パーセント減少した。
population・・・人口
district・・・地区
decrease・・・減少する

The relationship between Japan and the U.S. is improving.
日本とアメリカの関係はよくなってる。
relationship・・・関係
improve・・・よくなる、改善する

The price of the land went up sharply.
その土地の値段は急激に上がった。
land・・・土地
sharply・・・急激に
go up・・・上がる

The president of the company died at the age of 56 last year.
その会社の社長は去年56才で亡くなった。
at the age of 56・・・56才で
president・・・社長

The system didn't work well.
そのシステムはうまく機能しなかった。

前置詞不要の動詞

I entered the room and got dressed.
私はその部屋に入って服を着た。
We discussed the matter in the meeting.
私たちはその件について会議で議論した。
The typhoon is approaching Japan.
その台風が日本に近づいている。
He mentioned it several times in the meeting.
彼はそれについて数回、会議で言及した。
He married a very rich woman.
彼はとてもお金持ちな女性と結婚した。
We reached the hotel at 2:00.
私たちはホテルに2時に着いた。
I have to attend the meeting.
私はそのミーティングに出席しなければならない。

動詞の中には日本語から考えると前置詞が必要に感じながら、実際は前置詞不要という動詞がいくつかあります。

enter 入る intoは不要
He entered the room and locked the door.
彼はその部屋に入り鍵をかけた。
discuss 議論する aboutは不要
We discussed the problem for a long time.
私たちはその問題を長い間話し合った。
approach 近づく toは不要
The man approached her and said something.
その男は彼女に近づいて何か言った。
marry 結婚する withは不要
I want to marry the man but my parents don't agree.
私はその男性と結婚したいが、両親が賛成していない。
reach 届く・着く toは不要
By the time we reached the village we were tired.
私たちはその村に着く頃には疲れていた。
attend 出席する atは不要
I attended Mary's farewell party.
私はメアリーの送別会に出席した。

The average annual income of office workers aged 30-40 reached $70000 this year.
30-40才のサラリーマンの平均年収は今年70000ドルに達した。
average・・・平均の
annual・・・年の
aged 30-40・・・30才から40才の

Overseas graduate students are welcome to attend this course.
大学院留学生もこのコースに出席するのを歓迎します。
overseas・・・海外の
graduate student・・・大学院生
A is welcome to do・・・Aが~するのは歓迎だ

Synopsis

基本的な前置詞
時間を表す in/ on/ at in+比較的長い時間 in the year

間違えやすい語句

A)by/ until

I'll stay here until next Monday.
私は来週の月曜日までここにいます。
I'll finish this report by next Monday.
私は来週の月曜日までにこのレポートを終わらせます。

byはある時点までにある動作が起こる、untilはある時点まである動作が起こり続けるという意味です。
by Friday 金曜日までにある動作が起きる
until Friday 金曜日まで動作が継続する

Other examples

Please read the first chapter by the next class.
次の授業までに最初の章を読んでください。
I'm going to read this magazine until 8 o'clock.
私は8時までこの雑誌を読むつもりです。

B) despite

Despite the bad weather, they went on a picnic.
悪い天気にも関わらず彼らはピクニックに行った。

despiteはwith/ on/ inなどと同じ仲間である前置詞ですので後ろには名詞が入ります。また意味はin spite ofと同じですが、2つを混同してdespite ofなどとしないようにしてください。また、S+Vを使いたい場合はalthoughを使ってください。

Despite the bad weather
前置詞 名詞のかたまり       they went on a picnic.
Although the weather was bad
接続詞   S+V

Other examples

Despite his success on the project, he was fired.
そのプロジェクトでの彼の成功にも関わらず、彼はクビになった。
Although he is honest, he isn't trusted.
彼は正直だが、信頼されていない。

C) during/ while

He studied English during his stay in England.
彼はイングランドでの滞在中に英語を勉強した。
He studied English while he was staying in England.
彼はイングランドに滞在している間に英語を勉強した。

duringは前置詞ですからS+Vを取ることができません。またwhileは接続詞ですからS+Vが必要です。

during+名詞
while +S+V
During his stay in England
前置詞  名詞のかたまり     he studied English hard.
While he was staying in England
接続詞  S+V

Other examples

During the winter vacation, I studied hard.
冬休みの間、私はがんばって勉強した。
While I was on holiday in Canada, I didn't do any sightseeing.
カナダでの休暇を過ごしている間、私は観光を全くしなかった。

D) home/ abroad/ here/ overseas

We went home. 私たちは家に帰った。
He lives abroad/ overseas. 彼は外国に住んでいる。
He didn't come here. 彼はここに来なかった。

home/ abroad/ here/ overseasなどはすでに「に/で」という意味が含まれているの副詞ですから、in/toなどをつける必要はありません。名詞と間違えやすい語句は次の通りです。
abroad 海外に/海外で
I want to live abroad to learn English.
私は英語を習うために海外に住みたい。
overseas 海外に/海外で
Some people go overseas more than 3 times a year.
年に3回以上海外に行く人もいる。
here ここに/ここで
Visitors may not smoke here.
訪問者はここでたばこを吸ってはいけない。
there そこに/そこで
A friend moved to the island in 1980 and he still lives there.
友達が1980年にその島に引っ越して、未だにそこに住んでいる。
home 家に/で
I worked until 9 and came home at 10.
私は9時まで仕事をして10時に家に帰ってきた。

The shop will be closes for refurbishing until the end of this month.We apologize for any inconvenience.
この店は今月末まで改装のため閉店します。ご不便をおかけし申し訳ありません。
refurbishing・・・改装
apologize・・・謝罪する
inconvenience・・・不便・不都合

Japanese people who live abroad permanently sometimes have to pay taxes in Japan.
海外に永住している日本人が日本で税金を払わなければならないことが時々ある。
permanently・・・永久に
tax・・税金

前置詞

前置詞の働き

前置詞は名詞または動名詞(ing形~すること)の前に置かれ、それらの語句と共に形容詞や副詞の働きをする句を作ります。全く同じものでも形容詞の働きをする場合と副詞の働きをする場合あります。

後ろの名詞とセットになって動詞を説明する
I put the doll in the box. 箱の中に人形を置いた。
後ろの名詞とセットになって名詞を説明する
I like the doll in the box. 箱の中の人形が好きだ。
上の例文では二つともin the boxを使っていますが、それぞれ働きが違うことに注意してください。

基本的な前置詞

時間を表す in/ on/ at

I moved to Kyoto from Osaka in 1989.
私は1980年に大阪から京都に引っ越した。
I played tennis with some friends on Sunday.
私は日曜日に友達何人かとテニスをした。
I get up at 8:00 and leave  home at 9:00 every day.
私は毎朝8時に起きて9時に家を出る。
in/ on/ atはともに時間を表す前置詞ですが、それぞれにどんな時間を表すのかが異なります。
in ある程度長い期間を表す場合
in the week 週
  the year/ 1990年
  October/ that month 月
  summer/ the season 季節
on 日を表す場合
  on Sunday/ my birthday/ New Year's Eve
at 時刻を言う場合
  at 8:00/ noon

inは「現在から~後」という意味でも使われます。
in 5 days 5日後
 10 minutes 10分後
The plane will arrive in 10 minutes.
その飛行機は10分後に到着するだろう。

with

I went to Kyoto with him.
私は彼と一緒に京都に行った。

その男性はドアを鍵を使って開けた。
He came with his monkey sitting on his shoulder.
彼は自分のサルを肩に座らせてやってきた。
withは「~とともに」という意味の他に「~を使って」「~が~の状態で」という使い方もあります。
with+A Aとともに/Aを使って
with+A+状態 Aが~の状態で
I went to Kyoto with him.
        彼とともに
The man opened the door with the key.
             鍵を使って
He came with his monkey sitting on his shoulder.
           サルが   肩に座っている状態で

I cut the cake with the knife.
私はそのナイフでケーキを切った。
The tennis player hit the ball with his eyes closed.
そのテニスプレーヤーは目を閉じた状態でボールを打った。

その小説はその作家によって書かれた。
The man entered the room by breaking the window.
その男は窓を壊すことによって部屋に侵入した。
The price went up by 10%.
その値段は10%上昇した。
I have to finish the report by next Friday.
来週の金曜日までにそのレポートを終えなければならない。

byは受動態で使われるように「~によって」という行為者を表すほかに手段や程度を表すときに用いられます。
The novel was written by the writer.

              手段 壊すことによって
The price went up by 10%
         程度 10%分
I have to finish the report by next Friday.
             期限 来週の金曜までに

about/ on

I read a book about/ on Japan.
私は日本についての本を読んだ。
aboutとonはそれぞれ「~について」という意味を持ちます。

We had a long discussion on the problem.
私たちはその問題について長い討論を持った。
I have a question about the new car.
その新しい車について質問がある。

With the huge typhoon approaching, the peasants are busy nailing wooden boards over the windows.
その巨大な台風が近づいている中で、その農民たちは木の板を窓に打ち付けるのに忙しい。
peasant・・・農民・百姓
nail・・・釘、釘で打つ
board・・・板

According to the survey, the number of people who received medical treatment last year increased by 10% compared with 1980。
その調査によると昨年、医学的治療を受けた人の数は1980年と比べて10%増えた。
survey・・・調査
medical・・・医学の・医学的な
treatment・・・治療
increase・・・増加する
compared with・・・~と比べて

接続詞の慣用句

He is so kind that everyone likes him.
彼は親切なのでみんな彼が好きだ。
He is such an honest man that everyone trusts him.
彼はとても正直な男なのでみんな彼を信用している。
I left the door open so that my cat could come in.
私は自分の猫が入ってこれるようにドアを開けておいた。

So 形容詞/副詞 that S+V あまりに~なのでSがVする
I was so tired that I went to bed at 8 o'clock.
私はあまりに疲れていたので8時に寝た。

such 名詞 that S+V あまりに~なのでSがVする
He is such an honest man that everybody trusts him.
彼はとても正直な人だったのでみんなが彼を信用する。

so that S+V SがVするように
I locked the door so that nobody could enter.
私は誰も入ってこれないようにドアに鍵をかけた。

so~thatとsuch~thatは同じような意味ですが、使い方が違います。
This magazine is so interesting that I buy it every month.
                            形容詞
He worked so hard that he became ill.
        副詞
La France is such a famous restaurant that you should reserve a table.
           名詞

This book is so difficult that I don't understand it at all.
この本はとても難しいのでさっぱり理解できない。
He is such a rude person that he couldn't get the job.
彼はとても失礼な人なのでその仕事を得ることができなかった。
I went to bed at 9 so that I could get up at 5.
私は5時に起きることができるように9時に寝た。

Trains are so punctual in Japan that many people get irritated if their train is only 5 minutes late.
日本では電車はとても時間に正確なので、多くの人々は自分の電車がたった5分遅れただけでもいただつ。
punctual・・・時間厳守
irritated・・・いらだった

It was beautiful weather yesterday, so I lay down on the lawn to sunbathe.
昨日はとても美しい天気だったので、私は日光浴するために庭の芝生の上で寝ころんだ。
lawn・・・芝生
lie down・・・寝ころぶ
sunbathe・・・日光浴する

You can choose either this one or that one.
あなたはこちらかあちらか選べます。

私の両親も姉妹たちも大阪には住んでいない。

He studies not only English but also French.
彼は英語だけではなくフランス語も勉強している。

Both A and B AとBの両方
This job is suitable for both men and women.
この仕事は男性と女性の両方に適している。

either A or B AかBのどちらか
He wants to visit either Paris or London.
彼はパリかロンドンのどちらかを訪れたい。

neither A nor B  AもBも両方~ない
He neither drinks nor smokes.
彼は酒も飲まないしたばこも吸わない。

「~であっても」を表す接続詞

Although he was tired, he studied hard.
彼は疲れていたけれども、がんばって勉強した。
No matter how tired you are, you must study hard.
どんなに疲れていようとも、がんばって勉強しなければならない。
Even if you are tired, you must study hard.
たとえ疲れているとしても、がんばって勉強しなければならない。

「~であっても」を表す接続詞は次の通りです。
although/ though S + V S+Vだけれども
Although he worked hard, he was fired.
彼は一生懸命働いたがクビになった。

no matter 疑問詞+S+V ~しようとも
No matter what happens, I'll do it.
たとえ何が起ころうとも、私はそれをやる。
No matter where I stay, I can sleep well.
どこに泊まろうとも私はよく眠れる。

even if S+V たとえSがVしたとしても
Even if it rains tomorrow, I'll wash my car.
たとえ明日雨が降ったとしても私は車を洗う。

このうちno matter + 疑問詞は疑問詞+everと言い換えることができます。
no matter how tired you are どんなに疲れていても
however
no matter when you phone him いつ彼に電話しても
Whenever
no matter who did it 誰がそれをやったとしても
whoever

Other example

Although he was ill, he went to work.
彼は病気だったが、仕事に行った。
No matter who comes, don't open the door.
たとえ誰が来ようともドアを開けるな。
No matter which road we take, we'll be lost.
どちらの道を行こうとも私たちは迷うだろう。
Even if you get up late, you must eat breakfast.
たとえ遅く起きたとしても、朝食を食べなければならない。

Although the weather forecast predicted it would be sunny, it is snowing.
天気予報は晴れると予想していたが、雪が降っている。

predict・・・予想する

Even if you cut down on sweets, you won't necessarily lose weight.
たとえお菓子を減らしたとしても、それは体重を減らすのに十分ではない。

条件を表す接続詞

If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
もしがんばって勉強したら、あなたはその試験に通るだろう。
Unless you study hard, you won't pass the exam.
もしがんばって勉強しなければ、その試験に受からないだろう。
As long as you study hard, you will pass the exam.
あなたはがんばって勉強する限り、その試験に受かるだろう。

条件を表す主な接続詞は次の通りです。
if S+V もしSがVするなら
If it is sunny tomorrow, I'll do the laundry.
もし明日晴れたら、私は洗濯します。

unless S+V もしSがVしないなら
I won't go to the party unless you go.
あなたが行かないなら私もそのパーティーに行かない。

as long as S+V SがVするなら、する限り、する場合のみ
As long as you return it tomorrow, you can use my car.
あなたが明日返してくれるなら、私の車を使ってよい。

これらの条件を表す接続詞とともに使われるS+Vには未来形は使われません。
If it is sunny tomorrow, I will do the laundry.
is・・・明日のことだがifのパートなので現在形
will・・・明日のことだからもちろん未来形

Other examples

Unless it rains tomorrow, I'll wash my car.
もし明日雨が降らなければ、私は車を洗います。
As long as you stay in bed all day today, you'll get better.
今日一日ずっとベッドにいれば、あなたはよくなるでしょう。

As long as you take the medicine after meals, you'll recover from the flu soon.
食後にこの薬を飲む限り、あなたはインフルエンザからすぐに回復するだろう。
recover・・・回復する
flu・・・インフルエンザ

Unless the snow has melted away by tomorrow, the conference will be postponed.
もし明日までに雪が溶けてなくなってしまっていなければ、会議は延期されるだろう。
melt away・・・溶けてなくなる
conference・・・会議
postpone・・・延期する

理由を表す接続詞

I went to bed early because I was tired.

Now that I'm 20 years old, I can smoke.
私は今や20歳なのだからたばこを吸うことができる。

理由を表す接続詞には次のようなものがあります。このうち、普段は前置詞として使われることが多いforが接続詞、つまり後ろにS+Vを取ることに注意してください。
because S+V
since S+V       なぜならSがVするから
as S+V
for S+V
now that S+V   今やSがVするから

He couldn't take any pictures there since it was prohibited.
彼は禁止されていたのでそこで写真を撮ることができなかった。

He was glad to see Mary, for he hadn't seen her for ages.

今や私は失業しているのだから、たくさんの自由な時間がある。

接続詞|時間に関する接続詞

時間を表す接続詞に伴われるS+Vには、未来のことでも現在形を使います。時間を表す接続詞には以下のようなものがあります。
when ~するとき
When you go out tonight, please turn off the lights.
あなたが今晩外出するとき、ライトを消してください。

while ~する間
While I'm in London, I'm going to visit Tom.
私がロンドンにいる間に、私はトムに会うつもりです。

after ~した後に
I'll study after I watch this TV program.
私はこのTV番組を見たあと勉強します。

before ~する前に
I'm going to take a bath before I study English.
私は英語を勉強する前にお風呂に入るつもりです。

as ~するにつれて・~する時
As you climb the mountain tomorrow, it'll get colder.
明日その山を登るにつれて寒くなるだろう。

until ~するまでずっと
I'll stay here until he comes back.
私は彼が帰ってくるまでここにいます。

once ~いったん~すると
Once you've got used to he job, it will be easy for you.
いったんその仕事に慣れてしまえば簡単になるでしょう。

by the time ~する頃までに

every time ~する時はいつも

接続詞 that S + V

that S + V

I know that he is a doctor.
私は彼が医者だと知っている。
thatはS+Vを伴って名詞のまとまりを作ります。
I know that he is a doctor.
彼が医者であるということ→長いが1つの名詞と考える。

that+S+Vは名詞扱いですが非常に長くなるので主語として使いたい場合、文頭に置かずにitに置き換えてthat +S+Vを後ろに回します。従ってこのitは「それ」と訳してはいけません。
It is said that he is the best writer in the world.
↑           彼が世界一の作家であること
このitはthat以下を指す

副詞の役割

副詞は動詞や形容詞、副詞を説明するために使われる言葉です。

動詞を説明する

 動詞     副詞
I study English hard.(私はがんばって英語を勉強する。)
hardはどのように勉強したか、studyを説明している

形容詞を説明する

    副詞 形容詞
She is very pretty.(彼女はとてもかわいい)
veryはどのようにかわいいのかを説明している

副詞の形

A)副詞の作り方

通常は形容詞の語尾にlyをつけると副詞になります。
complete 完全な→completely 完全に
beautiful 美しい→beautifully 美しく
bad 悪い→badly ひどく
serious 重大な→seriously 重大に

B)注意すべき形

He is a good tennis player. He plays very well.
彼はとてもよいテニスプレーヤーだ。彼はとてもうまくプレーする。
The boy studies hard and he hardly plays outside.
その少年はがんばって勉強し、外でほとんど遊ばない。
Lately he's been coming home very late.
最近彼は家に非常に遅く帰っている。

副詞の中には形容詞にlyをつける形ではないものがあります。その一つはgoodで、これは全く別の形のwellになります。
good → well
よい・うまい うまく
またこれとは別にhard, lateは形容詞と副詞の意味を持ち合わせていて、形を変える必要がありません。それどころかlyをつけると意味が全く変わります。

hard ハードな・がんばって
He doesn't mind hard work. 彼はつらい仕事を気にしない。
He works hard. 彼はがんばって働く

hardly ほとんど~しない
He hardly works. 彼はほとんど働かない。

late 遅い・遅く
He was late. 彼は遅れた。
He got up late. 彼は遅く起きた。

lately 最近
I've been tired lately. 私は最近疲れている。


The kid always behaves very badly but I don't think he is a bad boy. He is just mischievous.
その子供はいつも悪く振る舞っているが、彼が悪い少年だとは思わない。彼はただいたずらなだけだ。
behave・・・振る舞う
mischievous・・・いたずらな

She works hard as a full-time midwife and she hardly complains about her job.
彼女は常勤の助産婦としてがんばって働き、仕事についてほとんど不満を言わない。
full-time・・・常勤の
midwife・・・助産婦
complain・・・不満を言う

Synopsis

形容詞は名詞を説明するために使う語句
small house  The house is small.

副詞は主に動詞・形容詞・副詞を説明するために使う語句
I study hard.    She is very beautiful.   I study very hard.

ed/ingのついた形容詞
edで終わる形容詞 説明されている名詞の感情
ingで終わる形容詞 説明されている名詞が他の人に与える印象

the + 形容詞は一般の人々を表すことがある
the rich 金持ちの人々
the elderly 老人

-thingで終わる単語を使う場合と、2語以上で1つの形容詞の働きをする場合は説明したい名詞の直後に置く

副詞は形容詞にlyをつける
bad - badly

注意すべき副詞
good - well  hard - hardly  late - lately

2語以上でつくる形容詞のまとまり

形容詞は名詞とセットになる場合は、名詞の前に置かれますが、2語以上で一つのまとまりを作っているときは名詞の後ろに置かれます。また、-thingで終わるものは例外的に形容詞を後ろに置きます。

1語だから前からproblemを説明する
those common problems

2語以上あるのでproblemsの後ろに置く
those problems common to the Japanese

-thingの単語は1語であっても形容詞を後ろに置く
something hot

このほかにも2語以上の形容詞をつくるやり方があります。

前置詞+名詞

You can read the books on the bookshelf
本棚にある本

The computer on the desk is a present from my father.
机の上にあるコンピューターは私の父からのプレゼントだ。


The  book about British history is very interesting.
イギリスの歴史についてのその本はとてもおもしろい。

to不定詞の「~するための・するべき」

I don't have time to study English.
英語を勉強するための時間

People should have the right to smoke.
人々は喫煙する権利を持つべきだ。

In today's meeting, we have a lot of things to discuss.
私たちは今日の会議でたくさん議論することがある。

形容詞として使うing / ed

The baby sleeping in the bed is my son.
ベッドで寝ている赤ちゃん

The book written by Tom is interesting.
トムに書かれた本

Some people studying English don't like it.
英語を勉強している人々のいくらかは英語が好きでない。

Wines produced in France taste good.
フランスで作られているワインはおいしい。

関係代名詞

The book which I bought yesterday is very interesting.
昨日私が買った本

I have a friend who lives in New York.
ニューヨークに住んでいる友達

The man whom I met at the party speaks English well.
私がパーティーで会ったその男性は英語がうまく話せる

This is the restaurant which Tome always visits to eat lunch.
これがトムがいつも昼食を食べにくるレストランだ。

関係副詞

This is the place where I was born.
私が生まれた場所

The company where he will work from next week is in Kyoto.
彼が来週から働く会社は京都にある

That is the reason why I don't like him.
それが私が彼を好きでない理由だ。


I don't notice I'd forgotten all the charts absolutely necessary for the presentation until I started.
私はプレゼンテーションに絶対必要な図表をすべて忘れてきたことに始めるまで気づかなかった。
chart・・・図表
absolutely・・・絶対に
presentation・・・発表

Foreigners working in Japan sometimes suffer from stress because of cultural differences.
日本で働いている外国人は文化の違いのせいでストレスに苦しむことがある。

theのついた形容詞

The rich always help the poor in the city.
その街では金持ちの人が貧乏な人をいつも助けている。

the+形容詞がその形容詞が当てはまる一般の人々を表すことがあります。
the rich = rich people
the poor = poor people

peopleの意味が含まれますから、通常は複数扱いです。従って動詞にはsをつけず、代名詞はtheyで受けます。この使い方ができる形容詞には他には以下のようなものがあります。
the young 若者
the old 老人
the elderly 老人
the sick 病人
the unemployed 失業者

The change in the national medical insurance system will have an influence on the sick.
国民医療保険制度における変更は病人に影響を与えるだろう。
medical insurance・・・医療保険
influence・・・影響

Owing to the severe recession, the unemployed are having difficulty finding a decent job.
厳しい不況のために、失業者はそこそこの仕事を見つけるのに苦労している。
owing・・・~のために
recession・・・不況
decent・・・そこそこの

形容詞と副詞

1.形容詞の働き

形容詞には2つの使い方があり、1つは名詞とともに使われる場合、もう1つは単体で使われる場合です。しかし、いずれも名詞を説明するために使われます。
The party was wonderful.
It was a wonderful party.
いずれもwonderfulはpartyを説明。

2.ed/ingのついた形容詞

Tom is interested in French.
トムはフランス語に興味がある。
Tom is very interesting.
トムはとても興味深いやつだ。

もともと「~させる」という意味を持つ動詞に、ed/ingがついて、形容詞になったものが多くあります。このed/ingの区別がつきにくいで間違えないようにしてください。例としてinterestとboreの例をあげます。
interest 興味を持たせる
He interests me 私に興味を持たせる
I an interested 私は興味を持たされている→興味がある
He is interesting 彼は興味を持たせている→おもしろい人だ

bore 退屈
He bores me 私を退屈させる
I am bored 退屈させられている→退屈している
He is boring 退屈させている→つまらない人だ

つまり、edの形容詞は説明されている名詞の感情や状態を表し、ingの形容詞は説明されている名詞を周りの人間がどう思うかを表しています。ingがついているとどうしても進行形を連想して「~している」と思いがちですが、もともとは「みんなを~させている」という意味だったと覚えてください。
He is tiring 彼は疲れるヤツだ
進行形を連想して「疲れている」と取らないように。
tireはもともと「疲れさせる」という意味なので、動詞の進行形と考えても「疲れさせている」となるはず。

このほかにも同じように使われるものはたくさんありますが、例をいくつか挙げると次のようなものがあります。
surprised 驚いている
I was surprised by the news.
私はそのニュースに驚いた。
surprising 驚かせるような
The news was surprising.
そのニュースは驚くべきものだった。
tired 疲れている
I was tired.
私は疲れていた。
tiring 疲れさせるような
The job is tiring.
その仕事はとても疲れる。
excited わくわくしている
I was excited.
私はわくわくしていた。
exciting わくわくさせるような
The game was exciting.
その試合はわくわくするものだった。
confused 混同している
I was confused.
私はわけがわからなくなった。
confusing 混同させるような
The story was confusing.
その話はわけが分からない。

His explanation was so confusing that no one really comprehended what he was saying.
彼の説明は非常に混乱するものだったので、誰も彼が何を言っているのか本当に理解していなかった。
explanation・・・説明
comprehend・・・理解する

His sincere attitude toward elderly people is surprising.
彼の老人に対する誠実な態度は驚かされる。
sincere・・・誠実な
attitude・・・態度
toward・・・~に対する
