学校から持って帰ってきた実際のプリント

アメリカの小学校に通う6年生の娘が学校から持って帰ってきたプリントです。

ボキャブラリーの勉強のプリント

私も英語の勉強のためにやってみることにしました。

娘の話だと、教室のホワイトボード（黒板じゃないんですね、今は？アメリカは？）にあらかじめ答えが書かれてあるので、みんなその答えを見てうつしているそうです。

そのあとで、これらの単語が出てくる文章が書かれた本を読んで復習するんだそうです。

(reluctantly…しぶしぶ）

認める

凝縮する、文章などを短くする

1.musical performance はCのコンサート

2.put something off until later　これはあとに先延ばしする的な意味かな？遅れのF

3.make text shorterは、Hのcondense文章を短くする

4.prevent something from working何かの働きから防ぐ、だから無効にするD. deactivate

5.agreeは、Eのconcur同意する

6.give up before the end or to accept reluctantlyは、しぶしぶ受け入れる前にあきらめる？甘んじて受ける？　これは難しいの最後に残ったAのconcede認める

7.go down　B？B. decelerate　G.descend降りる

8.slow down　こっちがB. decelerate　減速する

意味を調べながら、なんとか解くことができました。

concede 認める　 concert コンサート　concur 同意する　condense 文章を短くする

con ＝ with

decelerate 減速する　deactivate 無効にする　delay 遅れ　descend 降りる

de ＝ down / remove

最初のconとdeにはこういう意味があるようです。

アメリカの小学校４年生の英語の問題

 

アメリカの小学校４年生の息子が学校から持って帰ってきたプリントの問題です。ぜんぜんできてなくて、愕然としました。

そんなに難しい問題なのかと、自分でもといてみました。

そこそこ難しいなという感想です。

自分もできないのに、子供にどうやってボキャブラリーを勉強させたらしいんでしょうか？

アンダーラインの意味をA〜Dの中から選ぶ問題

１．The script is too long.

• A written text of a play
• B a costume used in a play
• C a photograph of a play
• D list of actor appearing in a play

scriptの意味は脚本

なので答えはAのwritten text of a play

２．Tom always gives good advice.

• F witty sayings
• G speeches of praise
• H guidance
• J answers to tests

witty 機知に富んだ、軽妙

speeches of praiseは人にほめてあげることば。guidanceは指導、手引

なので答えはHのguidance

３．The merchant was a dishonest person.

• A generous and kind
• B selfish
• C curious
• D untrustworthy

merchant 商人、業者　dishonest 不誠実、不正直

答えはDのuntrustworthy

４．They are descendants of Italian royalty

• F official aides
• G loyal supporters
• H family members
• J freedom fighters

descendants 子孫

答えはHのfamily members

５．I always let Pavel make the arrangements

• A plans and preparations
• B quarrels and fights
• C food and drink
• D lists and directions

意味は「手配はいつもパベルに任せている」なので答えはAのplans and preparations

ちなみにBのquarrelsの意味はけんか

６.My mother and I just had an argument.

これは簡単。答えはHのfight

７．We came upon a snag.

• A sharp tooth
• B unknown type of plant
• C mistake in a book
• D obstacle

snagの意味はひっかかり、思わぬ障害　came upon の意味は出くわす

これで７の意味は、思わぬ障害に出くわした　となります。

これで答えは消去法で（なくても）わかりました。Dのobstacle

アメリカの小学６年生の英語の宿題

 

アメリカの小学校6年の娘がうちでやっていたホームワークです。私に聞かれたのですが、さっぱりわかりませんでした。

あらためてちゃんと自分で勉強してみようと思いました。

まず、A〜Hの意味を調べていきたいと思います。

A. circumference 

周, 円周

B. commute

通勤

戦闘

D. circumnavigate

ナビゲートする

E. committee

委員会

G.circumspect

用心深い

H. circumvent

囲む

1. fight or struggle   

Cのcombat 戦闘だとわかります。

2. go around something, usually by water

？わからないのでとばします。

3. go around

？わからないのでとばします。

4. group of people who work together 

E. committee委員会だとわかります

5. cautions of what might happen

G.circumspect　用心深いだとわかります。

6. travel back and forth regularly

B. commute　通勤ではないでしょうか。

7. belonging to or used by everyone

？わからないのでとばします。

8. distance around a circle

A. circumference 周, 円周だとわかります。

わからないのは、２，３，７

あまってるのは、D. circumnavigate、F. common、H. circumvent

意味をもっと深ぼってみます。

D. circumnavigate

当たり前、共通する、普通

これは７だとわかりました。

H. circumvent

避ける、回避する、迂回する

まだはっきりわかりません

私が出した結論は、

かなと思い、娘がやったのと見比べたら、同じになり答え合わせができました。

最後の二つは難しかったです。D. circumnavigate周航するというのは、海の水のイメージがあるのでusually by waterとかいてある２かなと思いました。

最後の9. circumと10.comのところは、娘に聞いても正しい答えはわからずでした。娘が書いた答えはあっていたのかどうかもわかりません。

６年生となるとこんなに難しい問題になるんだなあと、ため息が出てしまいます。もう到底英語力では娘にはかないません。
