比較級・最上級の強調

His English is much better than mine.
彼の英語は私のよりも遥かによい。

She sings far more beautifully than me.
彼女は私よりはるかに美しく歌う。

His English is by far the best in the office.
彼の英語は会社で断然一番うまい。

She sings by far the most beautifully in the office.
彼女は会社で飛びぬけて一番うまく歌う。

形容詞や副詞などを強める場合はveryを使うことが多いですが、例外を除き通例、比較級・最上級に対しては、veryはあまり使いません。比較級にはmuch/far/a lotを、最上級にはby farを使ってください。

very (small, beautiful, good)
much/ far/ a lot (smaller, more beautiful, better)
by far (the smallest, the most beautiful, the best)

Although his painting was far more impressive than mine, I got the prize.
彼の絵は私のよりもはるかに感動的だったが、私がその賞を得た。
painting・・・絵
impressive・・・感動的な
prize・・・賞

We must find a far better solution than this. This one is so risky that it might make the matter worse.
私たちはこれよりももっとよい解決策をみつけなくてはならない。これはあまりにも危険すぎて、その問題をもっと悪くさせるかもしれない。
solution・・・解決策
risky・・・危険な

Ａと同じくらい～だ　as ～ as A
Ａよりも～だ　比較級 than A
一番～だ　the 最上級
Ａよりも～倍～だ　倍数＋as～as A  →half, twice, 3times, 3/4 (three fourths), etc...
比較級を強める語　far/a lot/much
最上級を強める語　by far

比較級・最上級を強めるのにveryは原則として使えない。

比較を使った慣用句
as～as possible　できる限り～
A as well as B　 B同様Ａも
known better than to do　～しないだけの分別をもつ
much less　まして～ない

彼はそのオフィスで一番よく働く。

This is the most boring book that I've ever read.
これは私が読んだ中で一番つまらない本だ。

最も程度高いことを表す構文です。
the 最上級　of 比較する相手（複数）
　　　　　　　　in 所属する場所
　　　　　　　　that S+完了形・・・今までＳが～した中で

She is beautiful 
         the most beautiful of all the women in the office.　
                                       of+比較する相手

He works hard
              the hardest in the office.
                               in+所属する場所・団体

This is a good book.
            the best book that I've ever read.
                              今までＳがＶした中で

One of his most outstanding achievement is his discovery of the virus.
(彼のもっとも傑出した功績の一つはそのウィルスの発見である。）
outstanding・・・傑出した
achievement・・・功績
discovery・・・発見
virus・・・ウィルス

Even the most intellicent student couldn't solve the problem.
最も知性的な生徒でさえもこの問題を解くことができなかった。
intelligent・・・知性的な
solve・・・解く

比較級の慣用句

比較級の慣用句
You should know better than to say such a things to her.
あなたは彼女にそんなことを言わないぐらいの分別は持つべきだ。
あなたは彼女にそんなことを言うほどばかではない。

know better than to do　～しないぐらいの分別を持つ、～するほどばかではない
I know better than to tell him the truth.
私は彼に本当のことを言うほど馬鹿じゃない。

I no longer work for the company.
私はもはやその会社で働いていない。

no longer 　もはや～でない
I no longer work for the company.
私はもはやその会社で働いていない。

I can't speak English well, much less French.
私は英語をうまく話せない。ましてやフランス語はうまく話せない。

much less / let alone　まして～でない
I don't have enough money to buy a car, much less a house.
私は車を買うお金がない。まして家を買う金もない。

このうちknow better than to doは「～する事よりもよく物事が分かっている」という意味から「～しないくらいの分別をもつ」という訳ができました。日本語は否定文ですが英語ではあくまで肯定文であることに注意してください。

The goverment should have known better than to let the dispute continue.
dispute・・・論争
continue・・・続く
政府はその論争を続けさせないぐらいの分別を持つべきだった。

You should have know better than to buy such a useless expensive price of junk. It was an awful waste of money.
そんな高価で役に立たないがらくたを買わないぐらいの分別は持つべきだったね。ひどい金の無駄だよ。
useless・・・役に立たない
junk・・・がらくた
awful・・・ひどい
waste・・・無駄

比較級 より～でない

This problem is less important than that one.
この問題はあの問題よりも重要ではない。
more ～のかわりにless～を用いれば「より～ではない」「より～の度合いがすくない」という意味の比較になります。

This problem is less important that one.
                   より重要さが少ない
This problem is more important than that one.
　　　　　　　　　より重要である

This book is less interesting than that one.
この本はあの本ほどおもしろくない
This soup is less tasty than mine.
このスープは私のほどおいしくない　

The weather in the mountain is less predictable so you should't be too confident.
predictable・・・予測できる
confident・・・自信のある
山の天気はもっと予測できないから、あまり自信を持ち過ぎてはいけない。

The capital of the country used to be considered less dangerous, but the crime rate has gone up.
capital・・・首都
dangerous・・・危険な
crime rate・・・犯罪率
その国の首都はかつて他とくらべて危険ではないと考えられていたが、犯罪率は増加してしまっている

Ａより～比較級

Ａ）基本的な使い方
She is more beautiful than me.
彼女は私よりも美しい。
He works harder than me.
彼は私よりもがんばって働く

形容詞／副詞の比較級＋than Aで「Ａよりも～」という意味になります。
thanも日本語では「～より」で、比較級も「より～」ですから「より」が重複することに注意してください。たとえば、smallerは「より小さい」ですがthanも「～より」というように日本語では重複しています。したがってthanがあるからといって安心してしまい、原級を使ったりしないように注意してください。
比較級　＋　than 　＋　比較の対象
He is tall
          →　taller than me.
His room is comfortable
                                →　more comfortable than mine.

This book is more exciting than the one I bought last week.
この本は先週私が買ったやつよりもっとおもしろい。

Unless we make the facilities and rides more attractive, fewer and fewer people will come to amusement park.
facility・・・施設
ride・・・乗り物
attractive・・・魅力的な
amusement park・・・遊園地
施設と乗り物をもっと魅力的にしなければ、遊園地に来る人がもっともっと少なくなる。

He was more devoted to his job when he started work.
devoted・・・献身的な
彼は仕事を始めたときもっと献身的だった。

原級の慣用句as～as possible / A as well as B

原級の慣用句

You must study as hard as possible.

あなたはできるだけ一生懸命勉強しなければならない。

He studies French as well as English.

彼は英語と同様フランス語も勉強している。

as～asを使った慣用表現があります。

as～as possible = as～as A can　できるだけ

Come home as soon as possible

すぐに帰ってきなさい

A as well as B  Bと同様Aも

He studies French as well as English.

彼は英語と同様フランス語も勉強している。

このうちas～as possibleは「できるだけ～」という意味で

as～as A canと書き換えられます。

You must study as hard as possible.

                       as hard as you can.

意味は同じ

When the queen goes on a trip, the hotels where she stays try everything they can to make her stay as memorable as possible.

（女王が旅行に出かけるときは、女王が泊まるホテルは滞在をできるだけ忘れられないものにするためにできる限りの事をする。）

memorable…忘れられない・重大な

The telephone service provides you with up-to-date information on bus and subway  schedules as well as fares.

（この電話サービスはバスや地下鉄の運賃だけでなく時刻表の最新の情報も提供する。）

up-to-date・・・最新の

fare・・・運賃
