theのついた形容詞

The rich always help the poor in the city.
その街では金持ちの人が貧乏な人をいつも助けている。

the+形容詞がその形容詞が当てはまる一般の人々を表すことがあります。
the rich = rich people
the poor = poor people

peopleの意味が含まれますから、通常は複数扱いです。従って動詞にはｓをつけず、代名詞はtheyで受けます。この使い方ができる形容詞には他には以下のようなものがあります。
the young　若者
the old　老人
the elderly　老人
the sick　病人
the unemployed　失業者

The change in the national medical insurance system will have an influence on the sick.
国民医療保険制度における変更は病人に影響を与えるだろう。
medical insurance・・・医療保険
influence・・・影響

Owing to the severe recession, the unemployed are having difficulty finding a decent job.
厳しい不況のために、失業者はそこそこの仕事を見つけるのに苦労している。
owing・・・～のために
recession・・・不況
decent・・・そこそこの

introduce

今回とりあげる英単語はintroduce
introduceは「紹介する」という意味がすぐ思い浮かぶのですが、それ以外にもいろいろ意味がありました。
意味は、他動詞で
１．紹介する
２．導入する
３．接触させる、経験させる
４．<話題>を[会話に]持ち出す
<議案など>を[議会に]提出する
５．挿入する、差し込む
６．・・・を[・・・で]始める、前置きをつける、
・・・の始まりを告げる
７．・・・を[・・・に]案内する

とこんなにたくさんの意味があって驚きです。
introduceを使った英文
ここでは「導入する」の意味のintroduceを使います。
A new pension system was introduced to support the elderly.
（老人を支えるために新しい年金制度が導入された。）

the elderly・・・the + 形容詞　という構成
その形容詞が当てはまる一般の人々を表すことがあります。
the elderly・・・老人
the young・・・若者
the old・・・老人
the sick・・・病人
the unemployed・・・失業者
the rich = rich people
the poor = poor people

pension・・・年金
これもあわせて覚えたい英単語ですよね。
