彼の英語は私のよりも遥かによい。
She sings far more beautifully than me.
彼女は私よりはるかに美しく歌う。
His English is by far the best in the office.
彼の英語は会社で断然一番うまい。
She sings by far the most beautifully in the office.
彼女は会社で飛びぬけて一番うまく歌う。
形容詞や副詞などを強める場合はveryを使うことが多いですが、例外を除き通例、比較級・最上級に対しては、veryはあまり使いません。比較級にはmuch/far/a lotを、最上級にはby farを使ってください。
very (small, beautiful, good)
much/ far/ a lot (smaller, more beautiful, better)
by far (the smallest, the most beautiful, the best)
Although his painting was far more impressive than mine, I got the prize.
彼の絵は私のよりもはるかに感動的だったが、私がその賞を得た。
painting・・・絵
impressive・・・感動的な
prize・・・賞
We must find a far better solution than this. This one is so risky that it might make the matter worse.
私たちはこれよりももっとよい解決策をみつけなくてはならない。これはあまりにも危険すぎて、その問題をもっと悪くさせるかもしれない。
solution・・・解決策
risky・・・危険な
Ａと同じくらい～だ as ～ as A
Ａよりも～だ 比較級 than A
一番～だ the 最上級
Ａよりも～倍～だ 倍数＋as～as A →half, twice, 3times, 3/4 (three fourths), etc...
比較級を強める語 far/a lot/much
最上級を強める語 by far
比較級・最上級を強めるのにveryは原則として使えない。
比較を使った慣用句
as～as possible できる限り～
A as well as B B同様Ａも
known better than to do ～しないだけの分別をもつ
much less まして～ない
