間違えやすい語句

A)by/ until

I'll stay here until next Monday.
私は来週の月曜日までここにいます。
I'll finish this report by next Monday.
私は来週の月曜日までにこのレポートを終わらせます。

byはある時点までにある動作が起こる、untilはある時点まである動作が起こり続けるという意味です。
by Friday　金曜日までにある動作が起きる
until Friday　金曜日まで動作が継続する

次の授業までに最初の章を読んでください。

I'm going to read this magazine until 8 o'clock.

私は８時までこの雑誌を読むつもりです。

B) despite

Despite the bad weather, they went on a picnic.

悪い天気にも関わらず彼らはピクニックに行った。

despiteはwith/ on/ inなどと同じ仲間である前置詞ですので後ろには名詞が入ります。また意味はin spite ofと同じですが、２つを混同してdespite ofなどとしないようにしてください。また、S+Vを使いたい場合はalthoughを使ってください。

Despite the bad weather

前置詞　名詞のかたまり　　　　　　　they went on a picnic.

Although the weather was bad

接続詞　　　Ｓ＋Ｖ

Other examples

Despite his success on the project, he was fired.

そのプロジェクトでの彼の成功にも関わらず、彼はクビになった。

Although he is honest, he isn't trusted.

彼は正直だが、信頼されていない。

C) during/ while

He studied English during his stay in England.

彼はイングランドでの滞在中に英語を勉強した。

He studied English while he was staying in England.

彼はイングランドに滞在している間に英語を勉強した。

duringは前置詞ですからＳ＋Ｖを取ることができません。またwhileは接続詞ですからＳ＋Ｖが必要です。

during＋名詞

while +S+V

During his stay in England

前置詞　　名詞のかたまり　　　　　he studied English hard.

While he was staying in England

接続詞　　Ｓ＋Ｖ

During the winter vacation, I studied hard.

冬休みの間、私はがんばって勉強した。

While I was on holiday in Canada, I didn't do any sightseeing.

カナダでの休暇を過ごしている間、私は観光を全くしなかった。

D) home/ abroad/ here/ overseas

We went home.　私たちは家に帰った。

He lives abroad/ overseas.　彼は外国に住んでいる。

He didn't come here.　彼はここに来なかった。

home/ abroad/ here/ overseasなどはすでに「に／で」という意味が含まれているの副詞ですから、in/toなどをつける必要はありません。名詞と間違えやすい語句は次の通りです。

abroad　海外に／海外で

I want to live abroad to learn English.

私は英語を習うために海外に住みたい。

overseas　海外に／海外で

Some people go overseas more than 3 times a year.

年に３回以上海外に行く人もいる。

here　ここに／ここで

Visitors may not smoke here.

訪問者はここでたばこを吸ってはいけない。

there　そこに／そこで

A friend moved to the island in 1980 and he still lives there.

友達が1980年にその島に引っ越して、未だにそこに住んでいる。

home　家に／で

I worked until 9 and came home at 10.

私は９時まで仕事をして１０時に家に帰ってきた。

The shop will be closes for refurbishing until the end of this month.We apologize for any inconvenience.

この店は今月末まで改装のため閉店します。ご不便をおかけし申し訳ありません。

refurbishing・・・改装

apologize・・・謝罪する

inconvenience・・・不便・不都合

Japanese people who live abroad permanently sometimes have to pay taxes in Japan.

海外に永住している日本人が日本で税金を払わなければならないことが時々ある。

He is such an honest man that everyone trusts him.
彼はとても正直な男なのでみんな彼を信用している。
I left the door open so that my cat could come in.
私は自分の猫が入ってこれるようにドアを開けておいた。

So 形容詞／副詞 that S+V　あまりに～なのでＳがＶする
I was so tired that I went to bed at 8 o'clock.
私はあまりに疲れていたので８時に寝た。

such 名詞 that S+V　あまりに～なのでＳがＶする
He is such an honest man that everybody trusts him.
彼はとても正直な人だったのでみんなが彼を信用する。

so that S+V　ＳがＶするように
I locked the door so that nobody could enter.
私は誰も入ってこれないようにドアに鍵をかけた。

so～thatとsuch～thatは同じような意味ですが、使い方が違います。

「～であっても」を表す接続詞

Although he was tired, he studied hard.
彼は疲れていたけれども、がんばって勉強した。
No matter how tired you are, you must study hard.
どんなに疲れていようとも、がんばって勉強しなければならない。
Even if you are tired, you must study hard.
たとえ疲れているとしても、がんばって勉強しなければならない。

「～であっても」を表す接続詞は次の通りです。
although/ though S + V　Ｓ＋Ｖだけれども
Although he worked hard, he was fired.
彼は一生懸命働いたがクビになった。

no matter 疑問詞＋Ｓ＋Ｖ　～しようとも
No matter what happens, I'll do it.
たとえ何が起ころうとも、私はそれをやる。
No matter where I stay, I can sleep well.
どこに泊まろうとも私はよく眠れる。

even if S+V　たとえＳがＶしたとしても
Even if it rains tomorrow, I'll wash my car.
たとえ明日雨が降ったとしても私は車を洗う。

このうちno matter + 疑問詞は疑問詞＋everと言い換えることができます。

理由を表す接続詞

理由を表す接続詞には次のようなものがあります。このうち、普段は前置詞として使われることが多いforが接続詞、つまり後ろにＳ＋Ｖを取ることに注意してください。
because S+V
since S+V　　　　　　　なぜならＳがＶするから
as S+V
for S+V
now that S+V　　　今やＳがＶするから

彼は禁止されていたのでそこで写真を撮ることができなかった。

時間を表す接続詞に伴われるＳ＋Ｖには、未来のことでも現在形を使います。時間を表す接続詞には以下のようなものがあります。
when　～するとき
When you go out tonight, please turn off the lights.
あなたが今晩外出するとき、ライトを消してください。

while　～する間
While I'm in London, I'm going to visit Tom.
私がロンドンにいる間に、私はトムに会うつもりです。

after　～した後に
I'll study after I watch this TV program.
私はこのＴＶ番組を見たあと勉強します。

before　～する前に
I'm going to take a bath before I study English.
私は英語を勉強する前にお風呂に入るつもりです。

as　～するにつれて・～する時
As you climb the mountain tomorrow, it'll get colder.

once　～いったん～すると

that S + V

I know that he is a doctor.

私は彼が医者だと知っている。

thatはＳ＋Ｖを伴って名詞のまとまりを作ります。

I know that he is a doctor.

彼が医者であるということ→長いが１つの名詞と考える。

that＋S+Vは名詞扱いですが非常に長くなるので主語として使いたい場合、文頭に置かずにitに置き換えてthat +S+Vを後ろに回します。従ってこのitは「それ」と訳してはいけません。

It is said that he is the best writer in the world.

↑           彼が世界一の作家であること

このitはthat以下を指す

It is believed that this castle was build in 1702.

この城は1702年に建てられたと言われている。

He is sure that he passed the exam.

彼は自分がその試験に通ったことを確信している。

The experts are certain that the accident was caused by the thick fog.

専門家たちはその事故が濃い霧によって引き起こされたということを確信している。

The government announced they would abolish the tax next week.

２．確信させる
３．<物>を[・・・へ]徐々に入れる、<返答など>を[・・・から]やっとのことで引き出す

辞書には赤線が引かれてあって勉強した形跡があるのですが、私の記憶にはまったく残っていませんでした。

persuadeを使った英文
No matter who tries to persuade me, I won't change my mind.
(誰が私を説得しようとしても、私は気が変わらない。）

no matter 疑問詞 +S+V  ～しようとも
No matter what happens, I'll do it.
（たとえ何が起ころうとも、私はそれをやる。）

no matter + 疑問詞は疑問詞 + everと言い換えることができます。

この単語も何度覚えようとしても
なかなか覚えられない単語の一つです。
他動詞で、意味は
１．<人>に[・・・で／損害などの]賠償（補償）をする
<人>に[・・・で／努力・仕事などに]報いる
２．<損失・欠点など>を[事で]埋め合わせする、相殺する
３．<振子などの>補正をする
自動詞で意味は
１．<人・物・事が>[損失・欠点などの]埋め合わせをする
[・・・を／人に]償う、補う

と、意味はいろいろあります。
compensateを使った英文
Unless you apologize and compensate for the damage, I'll sue you.
(もしその損害を謝罪して賠償してくれないのなら、私はあなたを訴える。）
この文では条件を表す接続詞unlessが使われています。

Unless S+V もしSがVしないなら
I won't go the party unless you go.
（あなたが行かないなら私もそのパーティーに行かない）
この条件を表す接続詞とともに使われるS+Vには未来形は使われません。
他の例文

もし明日雨が降らなければ、私は車を洗います。
